故事首先从主人公林冰所就读的油麻地中学开始，这所中学分为初中（红瓦房）和高中（黑瓦房）。一群孩子从故事中走出：身体壮实如牛、皮肤黑如乌鱼皮的谢百三，“从裤兜里掏出一枚小圆镜，转动着脸照一照”为标志性动作的马水清，诚实憨厚的刘汉林……不知不觉也就将你带进了那个雄纠纠气昂昂，虽然肚里饿得慌但说话总要高八度过的火红年代，也走进了那一群充满了冲动与烦躁的少年中。
曹文轩以优美的略带伤感的笔调，以一种悲悯与近乎追忆的情怀，为我们展示着一个个与主人公林冰休戚相关的少年的生活，也展示着他们或甜蜜或沮丧或绝望的情感世界。掩卷而思，一个个生动的形象仿佛就在眼前，杨文富被批斗时夏兰香的不弃不离，而杨文富却表现出了猥琐与怯懦，也因此深深伤了夏兰香的心，虽然后来他百般殷勤，却终未能打动夏兰香的芳心。“染坊之子”赵一亮由孤傲历经无奈辍学，无缘文化宣传队告别胡琴，当他一心想经营自己曾鄙视的染坊，成家立业之时，一场火灾再次将他无情的击倒，年少莽撞的他迫于想拥有栖身之所，偷了木排引来了劳狱之灾，滑进了命运的谷底。许一龙，一个不容许任何人在胡琴上超越他的理发师，因胡琴与赵一亮结缘（师徒之情）、结怨（同台演出，因被赵一亮的风头盖尽而气得吐血，也因此对赵一亮捣婚数次。），但当赵一亮蒙受命运的重大挫折时，他俨然是一位慈父，护犊之心跃然纸上。马水清面对着丁玫泼泼辣辣、一心一意的爱与舒敏情如温泉、若即若离的爱，他甜蜜地周旋着，但他最终走进了军营，留给她们的或许也就是绵绵无绝期的思念。主人公林冰一个才艺出色的少年对陶卉的爱坚贞不渝，却又半遮半掩，工工整整地写成的堆满了华丽词藻的情书却不敢亲手相赠，最后几经周折又回到了自己的手中，也只能“让它随着流水，一闪一闪地走了。”也流走了自己苦涩的初恋。当然不可忘的还有乔桉，这个心灵已被扭曲的大男孩，自己始终感觉活在别人的冷眼里，他想尽法子拆散杨文富与夏兰香、马水清与丁玫，在陶卉母亲面前捏造林冰的劣迹。历经与马水清、林冰的肉搏之战，最后竟杀死外公的凶手。当对他的冷酷与残忍切齿痛恨的同时，我也不竟多了一份沉思，一位笛子吹得悠悠扬扬的孩子，为何不能把日子过得灿灿烂烂，而一生都在为复仇而沉重地活着，或许人们给予这孩子的爱少了些。
当我们被一个个起落跌宕、震撼人心的故事牵着走的时候，也不忘停下来欣赏曹文轩用文字精心营造的诗意的境界。
“秋风几乎把所有的枯黄了的柿叶吹落下来，一院子落叶，竟把地上的砖头都盖满了……那柿子长得很大，扁扁的，熟透了，橙红色，打了蜡一样光滑，在夕阳的余辉里，仿佛挂了两树温馨的小灯笼。”
